I think hotels/motels got a discount on color televisions for promotion and signage.

Sort of. They bought all the TVs as a bulk deal, and the dealer would throw in the sign for free. It worked for both of them, because RCA (who paid for the sign) gets free advertising, and the motel gets to proclaim their color TVs (which were a big deal at one time.)

Related in my mind -- my FiL was a notorious cheapskate (7 kids) and my MiL thought color TVs gave you cancer, so they got a color TV late in the upgrade cycle. In fact, they got it because the neighbor was throwing one out to upgrade to a bigger one. The first thing they watched was the Wizard of Oz, which my wife (then an adolescent) had watched over and over on TV, and loved. The transition to Oz blew her mind. She had been watching the movie for years on B&W televisions.
