>Damage scanners are taking over more rental car return lots — and customers aren't happy. Since Hertz rolled out AI scanners in April, it has faced backlash for charging almost $1,000 for tiny scuffs. Now Sixt, a premium rival with 100 locations in the US, has in recent weeks begun using a similar tool called Car Gate. Already, it is creating problems. One customer told The Drive he returned a Mazda CX-50 at Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport only to be billed $605.82 for wheel damage. Documents sent to the renter showed that the damage occurred before the rental period.

I'll never use Hertz. They had probably 100+ people arrested for "stealing" their cars when the whole thing was a computer glitch or human error transposing numbers on returns. Some of these people were arrested two or three years AFTER they rented the car.

Fuck Hertz.

I think I used them once but it was at least 10+ years ago. Never again. I remember it being a shitty experience and won't ever go back. Reading this shit just means I will now be looking up any company that does this shit and won't be using them.

I already started taking video with my phone walking around a rental car every time I rented one (10+ years ago, on my potato quality camera). Fuck this bullshit.

Budget and Enterprise haven't done me dirty yet. I've stuck with them. Post consulting days I don't have the status anymore but I'll stick with them.

I have had pretty good luck with Enterprise. I even had someone ask me "was that scratch there when you rented it"?

I could not remember but I was tired, they looked me in the eye and shook their head "yes" while asking me again. I said "Yes, I think it was". They smiled, marked something down and said that it looked like everything was in order and there would be no additional charges.

Good on that guy. I don't think I caused a scratch but I honestly can't remember its been so long. Still. Good on him.
