Yeah most of the alternatives are mapping apps for phones. I need desktop based GIS type application. Hopefully earth will stay free.

I use it mostly for network planning - house locations, road paths, post locations and then can add in network equipment as places with boundary overlays and such.
Also use it for land development - plotting boundaries of a piece of land, planning use of said land.
Finally for surveys of the two above using a GPS to plot the survey course and then import all my notes / points into the map.
Such a useful tool for me.
