Been wanting to replace my 2006 desktop.. but can't find a good excuse. The machine was top-o-the-line 14 years ago, still works great today. Boots fast. Don't do video games anymore, so what's the point. Once the original beefy video cards fried in 2012 (6 years they lasted). just stuck a single bog standard VGA in it and been rocking it ever since.

Can still do real work on it without compromises. Need some convincing to replace this old beast.

You might want to think about an ASRock A300W, or whatever comes next, as a replacement machine when the time comes. The onboard Vega graphics are adequate for gaming and with DDR4-3000 RAM are similar to an older GeForce 1050. The barebones DeskMini with Ryzen 3 3400G 16-GB DDR4-3000 RAM and a 500-GB NVMe (forget SATA) WD Blue is about $460 total. Reuse your OS license. It's a really nice little beast.

I’m hoping the breakdown of global shipping will help lower the cost of hardware.

Damn so we have to replace our mobos and RAM again just to use newer cpus? fuck this shit

No one says you have to do so right away. When you build a new one, this new shit will be great.

by the time I do that, DDR6 will be out, I'll just stick with DDR4-3200

but I wish newer cpus would continue to support ddr4 for long enough. atleast 7 years.

It's the motherboard chipset that dictates what memory to use. So, you'll be in luck as plenty will support DDR4 for a few more years, if that's what you really want. Hell, I have a recently purchased board here that supports DDR3.
