They usually just use the last of the propellant to move them into a parking orbit where they just sit there forever. There's probably not much that can be learned from them, they just didn't want to talk about what the original purpose was. The radios are just sitting there drifting, so there's probably no chance of making them active, assuming the onboard electronics are even still sane.
