I don't like the name I don't like the logo, gentoo the fucking mouse

Some of you might think this is nothing but remember that's the sort of stuff (name and logo) you carry around ad vitam once installed

"Oh it's not windows what is it? Me: "gentoo...Yeah I know it sounds like crap but..." but but but "

And the mouse is what? To appeal to 5 years old kids or something? Can't we just have no mouse instead, like, idk, call it KBX42 and the logo is just that, "KBX42" with fancy metal effect on 3D letters if you insist and that's it https://pic8.co/sh/jtRBuq.jpeg

No, you have to include an animal, a lame ass rodent, a freaking rat. Why? Nobody knows. On top of that it looks amateurish

So you have a stupid name and a stupid logo to offer to people who install it the first time, that's the first thing they get in contact with, a lame name and logo, that's how it starts

Good job

...

That being said the UI is rather good, not fancy but all good (almost), top left you have a drop down menu and everything by category in it and not so ugly icons, it's fine. Not the most terrific and efficient thing in the world but that's something everybody is/gets used to quite fast, there's no shenanigans, it's just that and it works

The "dock" and top bar look too cheap though, that old flat white plastic texture, I'm not a huge fan, as a matter of fact everything looks made of cheap plastic because of this, it doesn't look reliable. But icons are fine, not super sugar coated shinny awesome, but fine, it's good it does the job it's clear and it's not ugly

The top bar and dock should look more like ubuntu's (yeah I know ubuncrap, but still, top bar just looks better https://pic8.co/sh/JPjZE5.png like that, and dock doesn't need a cheap plastic background texture, just a half transparent black/grey will do, it goes with everything)

I'm no fan of windows either, I think the buttons are too big and there's an overall feeling of waste of space, blank spaces. Contrasts aren't awesome you don't really feel like borders/areas are well defined/clear, everything just looks white and plastic cheap, giving a feeling of slightly messy/cheap/not really reliable

All those aesthetic concerns DO matter, because that's what you have under your nose all day long, that's your working environment right there

The mouse isn't gentoo's logo, that's the logo of XFCE - the window manager. XFCE is supposed to be a small, light WM, thus the logo. It's not designed to be infinitely customizable like others, so it tends to look a bit sparse and, as you noticed, ugly-ish in some cases. It's an ideal choice, because the Pi still has a relatively speaking underpowered ARM core processor that struggles with graphical things.

That being said, if you don't like it you can install a new WM, or...just use the command line like the LORD intended.

Ya know, I did try to install Gentoo once, but the zoo got really pissed at me when I tried to take one of their damn penguins. Not sure how it would fit in the computer anyway.

Yeah in the end with raspi it's command line, even just i3, well it works, and not that bad... But yeah, it's not like this is a perfectly "normal" computer

It's a raspi

That being said it's 64bit now with the 4, I haven't tested so I can't tell, mine is a later model B, 2011, made in UK

It runs neogeo games surprisingly and it runs genesis games also, no frame drop, but forget about snes games, needless to mention mame in general

Wow, still rocking an original B. I have a few of those laying around, but the two that run my network are a 2 and a 3, along with an Odroid C2 to handle the networking tasks that require a real Ethernet port. My original B units don't get much use these days, I should find something to do with them.

I can see why SNES and MAME are killing it tho a single core 800MHz ARM isn't anywhere near enough to handle the emulation properly with a giant OS in the way.
