Arch Linux or Devuan. I have no experience with OpenSUSE or BSD, but some people like them, depending on what your needs are.
OpenSUSE owners are in bed with MS and have been since the days of Vista.
New users jumping from windows should go with Linux Mint. Would be great if Mint ran on top of Devuan though.
Mint was my first Linux OS, too. I had a lot of random problems that went away when I tried distros closer to a base model that I could build up. I guess if I could go back and do it again, the advice I gave is the advice I would have given to myself back when and I'd probably be a year ahead on my Linux skillz.
Arch isn't the way to go for someone jumping ship from Windows but it's where to go when you want control. Ubuntu or Mint, I like the later more, is where a windows power user who has limited *nix experience should tred.
