They died because the 'atom' processors from intel were horrible. There are quite a few 8" - 10" laptops out there, but they definitely aren't as common as 13"+ form factors.

today's 13 inch laptops have the form factor of netbooks due to their smaller bezels, and there's a lot 13 inch laptops.

Sure, but I really am looking for something around the 8" mark. If it weren't for my auto-guiding software needing a screen, I would just go with a mini-pc.

8" inch with 3 usb ports is getting into meme device territory, the has 21 USB-A +1 USB-C on the tablet portion.

Would it be safe to say that the closest things to them now would be tablets with thin keyboard attachments?

I have thought of that, but due to the software that I use to run my mount and camera it needs to be windows. I have yet to find a windows tablet with 3+ usb ports and enough power to run everything. I don't want to spend thousands on a surface book, and USB hubs have given me nothing but trouble with the devices/software I use.

I know. I'm a difficult customer, but this is why I am looking forward to the plethora of options coming in the future.

Oh, you just need to annoy the Linux Open Sores people to get them to write software for your application.

There are those new palmtops with 6" screens but again they use lame Intel processors and are like $600.

Hopefully the new (((Apple))) processors will lead to much lower power using CPUs in PCs.

You can always use one of them there Devil's devices called a sail foam.
