I smell something fishy with this company. Sure it sounds modular and all but at the same time feels incredibly locked down. While not as popular as desktops DIY laptops are already a thing anyway, this company isn't even first to market. If you really want your own laptop with most the hard work sorted out you should check out . Or just do it yourself. Several companies sell the laptop shell itself or a bare bones laptop with just motherboard, from there just choose your own finished components and off you go.

I'd no idea you could make a DIY laptop!!!! Thanks.

You're welcome, go build something cool.

Thanks for sharing. I'm due for a refresh soon and I'm thinking about alternatives.

Founded in San Francisco in 2019

Nope'd the fuck out there. They could be selling antigravity cars for $20 and no thanks. Anything that comes from there is cancer.

Bro, sometimes you have to fight within/subvert the system. Not saying that's what happening here but you should validate before writing it off. It might even be worth working through a "less evil" company if it means we weaken the established and clearly evil players.

I say it's easier not to business with people that hate me. I know that's a radical point of view but I'm quirky like that.

I realize the SFBay area has been ground zero for milestones in human achievement like surfing and mountain biking but it's also home to communists like facebook, google, UC Berkley (the whole UC system really), Pelosi... I could go on. What ever you thought was valuable there has been long gone for decades.

Y'all give 'em your money. I won't.

Where are you getting that they "hate you"? And, trust me, I say this as someone who is about to leave a unicorn over mandatory "white privilege" training.

Incredibly woke company I'm sure. Probably will be tons of ads for this featuring smiling and happy white women and black men.

I'm not for a moment defending the "culture" there. I agreee with the sentiment, but their are always exceptions.

The SF Bay area has been home to much innovation, not just high-tech. Mountain biking is from Marin. Santa Cruz, may or may not have been the sitr of the first surfing outside of Hawaii, but it was certainly popularized there.

California and SF is not a monoculture ecosystem, yes there are those that are brainwashed from a liberal education and the msm, but there are also still a solid number of intelligent free thinking creative people who are still there. Judge each on their own.

Is it fair for someone of Europe to judge you based on what they see of America now I’m the news? Assume we are all rainbow haired retard trannies on the gov dole? No.

Now if they come out with ads and interviews and show who they are, and they are that way... well...

Nice, thanks for bringing it to my attention

Shut up dog.

Wish there were mobile phones like that (...or are there already?).

Pine phone and unlocked Pixel w/ GraphenOS are as close as we come as far as I'm aware. Neither completely viable atm but getting better all the time.

I don't use laptops. But my second-hand experience with them (my wife uses them) tells me that they break easily, or go out of date in only a few years, so the best policy is to buy as cheaply as possible. Who needs a ten-year-old laptop with a scratched screen that is obsolete? Or with a battery pack that won't hold a charge? My Dell tower is eleven years old. It's been regularly upgraded, so it is not out of date. I have no need to buy anything new.

My desktop is 11 years old and it's never been updated. Still runs everything just fine.

Spoken like the dude who puts a LS7 in an Astro van without any other modifications and declares it better than a 3-series BMW because it's faster in a straight line quarter mile.

Hoooookay, Grandad. You wouldn't know real PC performance if it smacked you in the fuckin' face with it's Maroon's dick pics.

they have to design it so other companies/people can make the modules if they dont then it is just one company you are locked into buying from.

computers are cheap and modular already. for laptop implements the raspberry pi and potable monitor combo is better. i spent like 650$ on my computer and i have a 1080p projector and a portable asus monitor with internal battery both connected to a raspberry pi 4. also a 2tB HD is connected to store media. the monitor does two way charging but i dont think its 3A. probably just 2.1. so if i took the raspberry pi 4 and connected it to the monitor it would probably get adequate power if the usb ports werent used much and underclocked.

e, this is what i use. a asus zenscreen. https://www.asus.com/Displays-Desktops/Monitors/ZenScreen

it came with a nice pen to prop the monitor up. and it tilts to portrait. the color lies close to the screen's surface and readable at good angles. the portfolio that the screen is meant to fit into does different origami-shit to support the screen at different angles and in portrait too but it makes for such a nice paper holder for when droping off documents, needing a solid surface for writing.

They don't show a good shot of the connector side....but are those "expansion cards" just USB-C dongles that sit flush with the chassis?

[–] 1 pt

I like the idea, but let's wait on the price. The liber phone or whatever that has hardware toggles is too much fucking money for not enough performance. These SF fags always have to put in their "carbon offsets" and PCR alluminum bullshit raising the price. We'll see how it plays out, but thanks for posting.

[–] 1 pt

Oh, you know what the price is going to be on this thing. We're talking Apple-level pricing. Sony-level pricing. Gucci-level pricing.

You're never going to get mass market price/performance with niche products. If you believe in a niche feature, you have to pay for it. If not, well suck it up.

Agreed, but there are limits.

[–] 0 pt

Can I get SeaBios on it?

[–] 0 pt

This seems like a good idea. But there's no prices listed anywhere. Why pay $1000 and then pay $500 in two years for a new motherboard? You can get a $500 laptop and just replace it every 2 years.

How many people will be willing to do all this work on their laptop? That's one of the great things about laptops - you configure it how you want and then just use it. If you get lucky, it will last and be useful for several years past the warranty expiration.
