In college, the only thing that MS Office had that none of the others had was the ability to track your references. You write your paper, input a source you're using, and then it'll spit out your bibliography in whatever format you want it to. Saved so much time. None of the open source office programs had that. Not sure if they do now, that was a decade ago.

They do. They also have automated tables of contents, automated styles etc.
