The biggest problem is political meddling with franchise agreements and the like. The other problem is that it takes decades to recoup the cost of such infrastructure, and the entire industry sees star link and other satellite providers getting more and more competitive by the day.

Would you run fiber out to the country at $10,000 a mile + maintenance when in 5 years satellite will be eating your lunch? Hell, with satellite technology, you don't even need a dish on each house. A cell tower with a satellite uplink can beam 5G wireless broadband to a neighborhood mesh broadband network with nearly infinite scalability.

I predict in 10 years, wireless high speed communications will be so fast, that wired communications will be for the elderly and 3rd world countries. It sucks for now, but this will did itself in the near future (assuming the government doesn't do something stupid to kill of investment)
