Oh noes I can’t buy an overpriced pos from dell, ;_;
I keep seeing people post stuff like this. Have you bought a gaming PC recently? A GTX 3080 is running at least and most of those "cheaper" ones ship from China, so they can't be trusted one bit. Select one shipping from the US and you're looking at . Combine that with the CPU and you're looking at for just a GPU and CPU. No ram, ssd, case, power supply or anything else. For you get a fully functioning gaming rig. Prices are insane right now and prebuilt PC make economic sense.
That being said I'm not a big fan of Dell PCs, but in my opinion Dell laptops are the best for price, warranty, and sourcing parts when out of warranty. I've replaced everything from screens, power connectors, and motherboards on probably 500 laptops in the last decade and Dell just makes better laptops. There are some better pre-built gaming PCs out there, but if you plan on craigslisting the whole PC in a year or two and just buying a new one then Alienware makes plenty of economic sense.
Yeah Dell warranty is the bomb. Esp. if you pay for the onsite service. I have a lot of Dells for that reason. No Alienwares tho
Alienware stuff tends to be sold with overhead for the name recognition.
It’s the way it’s always been, even when they were selling acid green Clevo laptops for 2x the price Sager sold the grey ones for.
True, but that also translates to resale. I'm not one to spend big bucks on anything and especially not electronics. However, many people do and come to me for advise. If you're not going to upgrade it (which hasn't be possible since the shortage started in late November), then they are pretty easy to sell and command a bit of a premium. Then you can turn around and buy a new one for cheaper than buying an upgraded video card.
As far as laptops go, the Alienware are some of the best. While there are one or two competing models which perform better for each generation, they aren't as reliable and usually are harder and more expensive to source parts for if they break a few years down the line. You have to catch the dell on sale though (or refurbished through their outlet). I remember when Lenovo/IBM used to make the best business laptops, but those days are gone. Even things like the new Dell precision laptops are much harder to service than they were, but still better than the competition.
I bought a refurbished Corsair One for the price of the graphics card in it. It is quieter than a non-gaming computer.
I know you can get a refurbished Alienware with a RTX 3090 for the price of the card in it, so that doesn't surprise me.
The pricing stupidity reminds me of a guy a knew a few years back. He saved up enough to buy a farm in the middle of no where and just wanted to get away from everyone. The farm had a dilapidated old barn on the property that he was going to tear down because it had already partially collapsed. It was poorly constructed but had three huge posts going across the ceiling. Each post was solid wood (oak maybe?) and something like 8"x20"x35'. A company paid him like $20k to come out with a crane and take the three pieces of wood. He only paid like $50k for the whole property including the barn. The original owner probably cut down and shaped those beams himself with a chainsaw and a dollar or two worth of gas.
Due to the chip shortage, a pre built pc is sometimes the only way to get a complete pc without paying scalper prices.
At the moment, it is the best way to get a new graphics card. Buy the PC with the card you want, put the card in your system, put an old (but still good) card in that system and sell it.
Yeah, I know only slightly more about computing than your great aunt who opened up her first Facebook account last year, but I was thinking to myself: Alienware? Who gives a fuck? Build your own rig, ya fag, ya."
Yes. They’re ok if you want a prebuilt machine with name recognition, but half the fun of a gaming machine is picking the parts.
I know of few old guys that like playing Flight Simulator and Elite Dangerous, but they don't know jack shit about PCs, let alone how to build them. They buy pre-built. Nothing wrong with buying pre-built.
In order to comply with California's requirement, Alienware now offers a special version which adheres to the new regulations.
Just make the power switch an optional modification installed by the user.
80% computer.
Mount the switch on top so the PC is the lower.
What is in them that is consuming all that power?
It’s the idle power of all the components causing the problem. The regulations assume that you’re just going to turn the machine on and let it set there 24/7 doing nothing.
I wonder if they've ever researched a PC made in the last 20 years, where they turn off when not in use.
and then the Europoors adopt that with more severe regulations
you will stream your vidya, own nothing and be happy
LAUGHS IN FREE CONFEDERATE BLOOD
no no no DON'T BY THIS THING ITS A GIANT LEMON AND PARTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE ITS A DISASTER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ulhFi5N2hc
It's getting to be like guns. Remember when you could walk into any store and buy a high end computer, or even mail order one?
But they'll allow you to buy a Tesla in California, in fact they encourage it with perks such as a sticker that allows you to violate their carpool lane rules.
That PC is shit anyway.
Can’t ship it to the state, can still buy it and move it there yourself.
The fact that government can tell you what shipments of whatever are allowed is pure commie bullshit.
agreed, and in this case the company should ship it anyways, is it illegal to ship there or just use it there??
Business idea
