My folks didn’t drink when I was a kid; I first saw cork as the pieces used to mount mutes to a trumpet. From the cheap cardboard ones I was loaned in highschool the ~$50 ones I bought for college, always cork. Truck is to exhale on the bell of the instrument and slightly twist the mute in. This is what all pro classical and jazz trumpeters (and other horn players) do to this day.
