I'd like to think the universe is that exciting, but somehow I doubt it.
That said... the science fiction of the past has a massive influence on the actual science/invention of the future. All the geeks who grew up watching original Star Wars or Star Trek- they're the ones who grow up and get into these fields. They use sci-fi for inspiration, many devices and experiments have come about because of this.
So could people be trying to rip a hole in the universe in order to communicate with extra-dimensional entities? Maybe. Will they succeed? Probably not.

It's a lot easier than these people think to get into other dimensions, just take some mushrooms or LSD.
