Reminds me of the movie Maximum Overdrive where an old car with no electronics was the only one that didn't go berserk. The more technology we have the more I envy the Amish.
I was thinking that it wouldn't matter if the device didn't have a WiFi connection, but these things could form mesh networks with neighbors, eventually reaching a node with an Internet connection. Even ten dollar things could contain bluetooth.
Not surprised. I think Mirai was the proof-of-concept that folks needed to see, though not muched has changed in the realm of securing IoT. A lot folks out there that think 'smart' is inherently non-threatening..
While there are many prevetive steps one can take in their home to limit these chatty devices - one good step is install Pi-Hole to limit or even block these devices from talking all over the place. Another step - disable Bluetooth anywhere you can, unless you really need it or can't live without it. I use Pi-Hole. You'd be amazed at how chatty some of my IoT devices are and how much gets blocked!

This is my second reply, I think AOU is fucking with me. I have my amateur extra.I took and passed all three tests in one sitting. Bad idea, I wished I had just passed my technician license and played around with vhf/uhf radios for a while. I get with other amateur extras and they immediately know just how stupid I am. I turned off my hf radios and am just focusing on my vhf/uhf radios. It’s an art, learning about radio propagation takes time. I jumped the gun. I needed to first learn about how radios broadcast, I’m still a complete moron on the hf airwaves. Yet I can legally broadcast there, those fellows are quick to make me feel like an idiot.
Oh, I took all FOUR tests at one time to get my Extra before they did away with the code test, you dirty No Code Extra.
