In this case this is literally NOT going to be true. There is no such thing as a part time developer that has the skills necessary to write this level of driver ESPECIALLY IF it is going to be an open source driver with feature parity of the proprietary drivers.

I am not a big linux fan. I understand hating microsoft, but linux has it's own problems. I am wondering what fork of linux this will be, and i have a dark hunch it will be an alphabet/google fork.

No no. They are only creating an open source version of their proprietary drives, that is all that is happening here. There is no impact on the Linux ecosystem in any way except now we have one extra driver option to choose from.

I am too lazy to read if they are going to keep their proprietary driver and have an open source along side it or if they are dropping proprietary drivers and opensourcing the driver fully and permanently. The reason that I don't care to look it up is that you cannot trust Nvidia and they will just pull a fast one on everyone at some point regardless.

Where this could really help linux is in support of HDMI 2.1. Apparently HDMI 2.1 cannot be supported with open source drivers because of some consortium bullshit, so maybe this will include the appropriate licensing to support HDMI 2.1 and allow us to drive 8k tvs at 120hz.

However, there is no fork of the Linux kernel or any subsystem happening here.

I hope that explains things a little bit.

Yeah, i am conflicted about it. So it allows bigger companies to have a better understanding of how the games affect the hardware, and hardware companies to have better integration, but at the same time where will driver updates come from? this sounds like a great way to inject malware.

I still prefer Linux but the bloom is off that rose for sure.

Maybe if I went back to Slackware it would be like the old days...
