I bought a $200 thermal camera that plugs into my phone's charge/data port that works really well. Seeek on android and iphone. Also have a $30 HD boroscope camera with a 30-foot cord that can easily fit into a spark plug hole and plugs into USB 2.0 port. Works better than the $1500 stand-alone boroscopes mechanics buy.

I've built a system similar to this sound camera, but I can't tell you the details. The realtime processing is impressive on the linked gadget, as my design uses software FFTs and isn't exactly realtime, but also doesn't need to be.

Yeah, it's mostly just processing. A bunch of mics and ADCs can probably be assembled for a fraction of their cost. There will probably be a DIY version of this true 3D mic in a few years with open-source to drive it.
