Hi. I've read your post and understood approx 60% of it (sorry, it's not your fault).
It contained this sentence that I wanted to express disagreement with: "Open source operating systems and software have forever changed the world." I disagree with this statement so profoundly that I chose to make a throwaway just to let you know.
This is NOT me asking for advice, or asking to teach me skills for free, I can't underscore this enough. This is me ranting about my problems.
At this point in my life, I'm willing to let a government sodomize me in all possible ways, rather than learn skills needed to make some open source programs/sites work. The most atrocious (again, not asking for advice) example of this is OpenVPN. Here is a review of it I've read: "This piece of software is the least user-friendly one you can get for Windows platform. / Unless you are majored in computer science you will 100% fail to make it work. /... / ... / save your time and ignore OpenVPN" - That's exactly it!!!! I'm not "majored in computer science" and I did fail to make it work. Wasted an entire day, or more. I shouldn't have to learn an additional skill to make a program work.
What I'm going to write is irrelevant, but since it's the first and last time I'm talking with you, I figured why not. Here is a (incomplete) list of programs/sites that I use:
a random rss program (free, open source) / write.as (for blogging, works perfectly, freemium, open source); / youtube-dl with graphic interface (downloads videos, works well enough, free, open source) / mastodon (twitter alternative, works perfectly, free, open source) / riot (text, and voice communicaiton, works perfectly except government keeps fucking with voice and keeps disabling it, free, open source)
criticker I give a honorable mention because it's a site that I use as a netflix alternative, other than holohoax documentaries that it keeps recommending me everything it recommends I actually enjoy.
cock.li (e-mail, works almost perfectly, free, closed source); /protonmail (e-mail, works perfectly, free, closed source); / paypal (payment processor, beyond shitty, paid, closed source, if I had a choice, which I never will, i wouldn't use it) / opera (browser, shitty but more user friendly than most, free, closed source) / windows xp (os, free, closed source) / chatroulette (after few users doxed me on youtube I have no incentive to fear further doxxing; possibly owned by google, free closed source);
so the things I'm unable to, or unwilling to, replace with alternatives are (only webmail is by choice, everything else I have no choice): OS, webmail, payment processor, browser, VPN. So anyway, like I said, I would rather risk even going to prison! than waste time and burn nerves again.
Make sure to have a really nice day, a summary is that open source anything will not change my life and never will.
