What the fuck are they recording that it would need to not only collect but transmit that much data? Why does a washer need wifi at all? Eventually you probably wont be able to buy so much as a toaster without it -requiring- an internet connection to work. The future is stupid.

From the post: "An LG washing machine owner and self-confessed fintech geek has asked the Twitterverse why his smart home appliance ate an average of 3.66GB of data daily. Concerned about the washer’s internet addiction, Johnie forced the device to go cold turkey and block the device using his router UI. Had the LG washer been hacked, hijacked, or otherwise tampered with over the net – or was this average data consumption for a smart appliance like this?"

Why does a washer need wifi at all?

Indeed. Why do we need smart appliances of any kind? People still tell me we are running out of IPv4 addresses (public IPv4, yes) so we need IPv6 on private networks, to which I say, "Why does your carpet need an internet connection, for each tuft? Or the studs in your walls? Who has a home network with millions of devices?"

Might as well need a subscription to LG approved laundry detergent to do your laundry...

Now that's a good point. How long until they make "pods" like they do for coffee and DRM them? Now you can only use brand approved pods and you have to buy them on subscription directly from the company.
