The sound thing is not why this plane was made. In the age of video calls, no one needs to get somewhere in person faster than the speed of sound so badly we need a 247 million dollar jet. I suspect that this jet was used as an excuse to do research on supersonic military tech or something in the public eye without people thinking it's for military purposes, the same way nasa used it's rocket tech on other things later on.
