I have a 40" hooked up to my PC that I sometimes use to watch stuff I'm stream from my PC. I never use it as an actual TV. I wanted to see if I could download the Rumble app on it. When I hit the home button I received a message stating the OS would no longer be supported and I could explore these options for a new TV. I think this is wild that a display that works fine should be replaced because the software is toast.

Did you mean 'streaming' as in streaming services/sites? If so, are there any worthwhile free streaming services/sites you could recommend?

Ehh, they are basically all garbage but if I want to watch something on Rumble or jewTube I don't need a app for it. All of my blockers, ad-skippers, etc.. all work since its in a browser and not in a jewed to fuck app.

If any company (all of them will eventually) goes app-only I will never use it again or if I do, I will use some workaround that strips the content without all of their tracking, metrics, advertising, etc....

I agree. PC entertainment system has been the way to go for me for nearly 25 years for the reasons you mentioned, can't see that changing. Back in the day my ISP came with cable tv too, but that was mostly crap.

Cheers

It was a bitch to get it to work right and when I was young I didn't have enough storage to really use it properly but "MythTV". A open source Linux based DVR system that basically told the companies to fuck themselves. It had built in commercial detection (that mostly worked) back in the early 2000's.

I too would like to know. This whole discussion made me realize I finally have an income where I can just build a PC and stream from that instead of the surveillance devices like chromecast or fire sticks

Yeah just build a multimedia/gaming pc and you can do it all. Plug in a large screen (smart tv) via hdmi as the monitor, a wireless keyboard and you're good to go. Best thing is it's all modular so you can modify software/hardware as needed. Sourcing content is ever changing but overall the options are better than ever.
