I don't like how power users shape the discourse on the site with shit articles and now I can't even call them out on it without creating a separate thread.

If you're banned that person can't see your posts or comments, hon. I think the logic is to prevent less well-meaning users from mucking up a post's comment section unbeknownst to an OP.

And you can see how this thing is double-edged. Besides, replies still show up but they're collapsed by default <- how it was before this

They still show up? I've blocked someone once temporarily so I'm still unclear of how it fully works. However, it's likely for the best you can't reply to people who've blocked you; sometimes you need to ignore others.
