I think that's how Reddit work(s/ed). "Controversial" posts which had close to the same up to down vote ratio would rise up in the feed.

My preference is how Voat looked at it though. If you like a post, upvoat it. If you don't like it, don't. You could report spam and stuff, but the downvoat button also served to put those posts at the bottom in the meantime before a mod or admin could get to it so the good stuff stayed on top.

My issue with the voat or poal approach is how the downvote button is essentially just a "spam" button.

The way it is used on Poal is explicitly a spam button. So why not make an actual spam button and just treat the up/down vote as an activity guage. More active shit gets pushed to the top. No respect to up/down ratio. If a post has +5/-5 it is weighted as having 10 upvotes, so it will sit next to the post wil +10/-0.

Personally, this would make the most sense to me.

That does make sense. It would open up some faggotry where some people start using the spam button as the disagree button though. If implemented however, I have no doubt AOU would stomp that out pretty quick.

Exactly. It becomes VERY easy to identify if someone hit "spam" because they disagree.

"Is it actually spam/off-topic? No? Then he hit it as a disagree button."

Way easier to find abusers.

But then how do you spot downvote bitches?

It doesn't matter. Those downvoting the post are actually driving the post higher.

Poal would need to adjust the way it handles points slightly. Specifically, a downvote wouldn't count against your level, but a spam mark would. In short, the way the downvote button works now would become the "spam" button.
