My kid is getting annoying with asking for a cell phone. She's 12. All the other kids do, in fact, have a cell phone. If we went any particular route, it would be a flip phone or something at best, but I am familiar with modding, so that is an option (say, to get a solid phone and then mod to lock-down/remove bloat).

Curious what others out there have done.

Edit: TMobile, would rather not get any "new" or phones on a loan/prepurchase. IMHO, she's not getting one at least until she's 13...

None of them will have their own smartphones until they are 16. Dumbphones when they are 12. They can use "family" smartphones and tablets in the house or places where we also are present from any age.

Treat smartphone rules the same as you would with guns. The danger with them is not physical, but psychological.
