My vacuum just bit the dust. It was a Miele, I got it because I remembered an AMA from a vacuum repair guy more than 10 years ago who said they were the best. It had terrible suction and the cord isn't long enough to make it all the way across some rooms (have to stop half way and plug into a closer outlet).

So, can anyone please recommend a great vacuum, good for pet hair in carpets, can also handle tile, has a long cord, preferably an upright with a canister instead of a bag, and a lot of suction.

Thanks.

I have a Kirby that I picked up used (it's from the 80s) and I love it. I can fix and get parts for every bit of it. When my ex cut the cord, I just picked up a new one and replaced it in a few minutes. I have even replaced the brushes in the motor.

The downsides are that a lot of people absolutely hate the weight and the way you attach the hose. Neither bother me because the suction is worth it. Before I grabbed it, I was killing vacuums at an astonishing rate (guinea pigs make a mess with hay and most vacs other than shop vacs just can't do it). I have had it kill cheap, crappy carpet because it is so strong. I have a cheap rechargeable vac for small jobs that I use like we used to use dust busters back in the day when I don't feel like dealing with the cord. It also uses bags which is a downside for some but I prefer it because I can just toss and replace the bag rather than dumping dust in my trash.

I also bought a used Kirby. Best vacuum I've ever had, hands down. Parts are plentiful and cheap, and the thing is a tank. Yeah, it's on the heavy side, but it has a transmission that makes it pretty effortless to use. Apparently they sold new for something like $1600 (no way I'd pay that), but I found it used but well treated and complete, with all the attachments for $25. It's already outlasted two Dysons that my wife uses in the other end of the house, and is still going strong.

Just make sure you're buying it from clean people who take care of their shit, and you can't go wrong, IMO.

Now all I need is a door to door salesman to come by. If I remember right, those have a lot of room for negotiating the price.

I was lucky and didn't have to deal with the sales guy. Someone had literally dumped it on the side of the road with a note that said broken. It wasn't, they just didn't know how to attach the cloth bag properly. I really lucked out. I've had it at least 15 years at this point and it even survived an angry ex. I picked up accessories off eBay for it.
