Electricity transmission from other locations is obviously what the grid is good for, and those other locations can make use of renewable resources not available locally. Being self-sufficient and reducing greenhouse emissions are two different issues that often overlap.

You said you're on the grid, so you've already paid. A billion dollars is chump change compared to the amount the government spends warmongering.
