If no gutters its the way to go.

My father specialized in stick framing big waterfront houses with exceedingly complex roof framing designs.

I'm not the expert but I spent many summers with his pattern, cutting birds mouths in rafters and hanging joist hangars when I was too young for the skil saw.

And damn, catching soft crabs with a dip net or peelers out in the water on our lunch hour.

Those were the good ol days.

I grew up with it too. Age 14 and up, I worked school vacations and a couple of summers during college. Dad was a Carpenter/Contractor/Developer. His father was a boat builder in the early 1900s, turned carpenter/contractor - and my dad worked on his crew as a kid. Great memories I'll always treasure, dad died at age 50. I'm thankful I was able to spend all of that quality time with him.

If you have a choice and aren't adding soffit.

I guess I'm a purist. And it's the predominant style. I don't like the finished look of eaves with a squared tail fascia and soffit. Not angling the tails is minimalist - okay for a quick shed. You have to snap a line and trim them anyway, why not angle them? If your only concern is runoff staining it over time, bigger dripedge works well, with or without gutters.

Actually if the shingles dont hang over enough the drip edge does nothing, Water wicks. I dont understand why you think the soffit cant still be flat. The only dif is the fascia is angled so water doesnt run over it.
