Many operating systems, file managers and image viewing programs create a thumbnail cache/database to load thumbnails faster.

Some software might also create thumbnails from video (e.g. first frame).

I'd have to say low-res thumbnails would be worse than nothing. Just my opinion. You can't really see the photos, it's just a reminder of your dataloss. Like the thumbnails are taunting you. It would piss me off to look at them. Rather just trash the thumbnails and forget about the damn photos. Yes, I know I'm fucked up in the head.

Many many of my pictures are of circuit boards and disassembly steps of various things I need to zoom in on to look at fine details.. if they're just low-res thumbnails they're just useless to me. Of the 1,408 photos on my phone right now, 0 are photos of humans.. so no sentimental memory stuff. If a psychologist knew this about me, they'd probably want me committed...
