No, it's not equivalent because of the hierarchy. It's worse to kill a human than a pig because we're more sentient.

Do insects count? Small rodents? Where does sentience begin, as you have already said bacteria and plants are okay to kill.

Rodents, definitely. Insects are debatable. Most vegans err on the side of caution with insects.
