I have a pretty firm belief that most physically-able people can learn to play guitar, with some degree of skill. I even know some physically disabled people who can play guitar. Django Reinhardt only had two fingers and a thumb - on his fretting hand, and he's on my list of guitarists better than Hendrix - and close to the top.

The big difference seems to be the rate at which people will learn. The hoodlum has a distinct advantage, and it shows. When she has a question, she's pretty much attached to my hip - and bursts forth with her question. Where I might give her three or formal lessons per week, she gets 500 mini lessons per week, 'cause she's attached to my hip and full of questions. Her brain is also more plastic, meaning she's able to learn skills like music, at this age, more rapidly than people older will acquire those skills.

I am literally changing the physiology of her brain. There's a couple of bumps on the left side of the brain, it's to the rear, and those who study music at a young age will have a larger amount of brain tissue in that area. If you play, you can watch that fucker light up like a Christmas tree on an fMRI. The earlier you start, the more rapidly you'll acquire information.

This doesn't mean older people can't do it. It means it will take them more effort to reach the same levels.

There's a lot to learn, even for basic proficiency. The rewards are worth it, in my opinion.

Oh I will learn, I will. I've set my mind too it and if nothing else I have will power. You'd better be careful I have a pretty decent idea of where to find you and I may just try to force you to give me a lesson or two someday. I wouldn't do it now as I'd be far to embarrassed at my current skill level its been well over a weak and I can not do what I would have expected myself to be able to do. I imagine someday I'll be able to play a bitchin solo and I'll probably have you to thank for it as I would probably never have picked up the hobby if it wasn't for you, I know I wouldn't have the guitar I have if it wasn't for you, so thank you again. Someday I'll record a bitchin solo and post it to poal and maybe even some other sites. However that day isn't today and it won't be tomorrow it'll probably be years from now but it'll happen someday.

If you turn on the bridge pickup, turn your volume up more than half-way, and then fret the thin E string on the 7th fret and shake the guitar neck up and down, ever so slightly and while keeping your fretting firm enough to securely fret it but let the guitar move a little freely, while you let it ring...

You're on the way to a bitchin' solo!

Also, it sounds awesome. If you have reverb, toss a little in. Play with it until you make your guitar scream that note out in such a manner that it can terrorize small animals.

It's pretty much the most awesome sound in the world.

This might eventually annoy anyone who can hear you. It's even more awesome, if you've got enough volume to cause permanent hearing loss!
