I am going to try to boot this laptop from the flash drive and see what its like

it will run the same on any laptop right, i was just going to run it off the flash drive on the one im using for him to test it

No. His hardware will be different. Make sure the wifi works and the monitor works. Those are the two big ones.

The manufacturers don't always write drivers for Linux, 'cause they fucking suck balls.

So, sometimes there are hardware issues - but they're fairly rare.
