I will ask him. I think I had put linux on a laptop he had years ago and he liked it but then he spilled beer all over it and got a new laptop with windows and been using that ever since. I am not sure if he would like it any more, cause he would be lost
Linux Mint (of which I prefer Debian Edition) is pretty good. It uses the Cinnamon DE and that's really familiar to Windows users. It's not Windows, but it looks similar.

Write it to a USB with Balena Etcher.
Start the laptop and press F12 (normally) to access a one-time boot menu. Select the USB device (that you inserted before booting) and then let it do its thing.
As it's loading it into memory (RAM) it'll take a minute. Then, the desktop will appear.
Make sure the hardware works and, if it does, make sure he likes it. If he likes it, then go ahead and use it.
I will try that and see what he thinks of it, thanks!
Let me know...
So long as he just updates after it's set up how he wants, it should run without any problems.
If he starts fucking with stuff, that's when it starts to break. So long as you don't fuck with it, it should just work.
But, make sure the hardware all works first. If you have any questions, I'll be here off-and-on today.
