I used to have a blue and black box. The blue box let me make free long distance calls. The black box was for if they caught me - and it would take down the entire telephone circuit.
We were 'phreakers'.
I have heard of that but I never got involved in any of that
There were many laughs and so much free-flowing knowledge if you knew where to look.
Some of what we were doing wasn't even illegal - 'cause they hadn't gotten around to making laws yet. It was all still so new.
Instead of visiting IBM's website, you'd login to IBM's mainframe and download their catalog. But, it was their mainframe. So, you had access to everything on it if you knew how to get in. And, back then, that meant even things like their building's control system. As in, you could stop an elevator or shit like that.
It was a great time of learning. The idea of needing to secure your computer meant having a guard at the door. Old Man Norton hadn't even invented his anti-virus software back then.
It was truly the Wild West of computation.
Definitely a whole different world than what we have now. Those were good times
