That does help. You can kinda fake it if you know music theory and how a harmonica works.
I've actually spent many hours dedicated to learning a little about the harmonica. I can play passably. I'm even on a CD that sold fairly well playing a harmonica on a couple of tracks. That was actually because the real harmonica player was incarcerated.
It is very simple if you are playing a song in A and you have a harmonica in A, as there are no wrong notes. You could, like you said, play one from another key as long as you know what notes are in the key you're playing in. That would take some thought though, and who wants to think anymore?
I've got at least one harmonica in every key, I'm pretty sure. I even have a fairly fancy suitcase with foam lining that's cut out to hold harmonicas. I bought that one as a complete set.
