Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask COF, Crazy, or myself.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

Nice, got a little EVH spirit in there. Thanks for posting.

[–] 4 pts

Sounds like you were having some fun there!

[–] 4 pts

That was interesting, including the graphics.

[–] 6 pts

Earlier this week my friend Chris stopped by and we sat around the kitchen table with Verle drinking a case of Budweiser, playing guitars and singing songs. Verle wants us to go do shows where we set up a table and sit on some chairs around it with a case of beer and we tell stories and play songs for people. LoL Here is our version of Tom Petty's Last Dance With Mary Jane (soundcloud.com)

[–] 5 pts

Nice.

I think we covered this one once, but we surely didn't do the vocals.

[–] 5 pts

I seem to remember that you did cover this one in the past. Chris had his box of harmonicas with him so we had to play at least one song with a harmonica part

[–] 4 pts

Hmm... If you try hard enough, any song becomes a harmonica song!

[–] 4 pts

you guys have too much fun lol. I don't have the patience to learn other people's songs, so I rarely learn a cover.

[–] 3 pts

Thanks!

I don't really take any time to learn the songs we sing together. I just watch what my friend Chris is playing and fugure out something for me to play based on that.

[–] 4 pts

I was going to say "fuck you" then because I can't just pick up and play a song with someone else... But then again...

My guitar buddy that I haven't played with in like 2 years used to play a riff, and after a few times I could figure out something over it. I miss that. Wuhan shit, and him being a lazy dick not coming over to my new house has put a damper on that.

[–] 4 pts

Love this song. I think I first heard it in 6th grade and became a Tom Petty fan at that point.

[–] 4 pts

Oh hell yes. Great tune done well. Nice to have the harmonica in there. Verle sounded a little more sedate than usual so I could understand him.

Good idea on the format, don't even have a stage just sit at a table in the middle of people and let everybody sing along. That sounds like a party.

[–] 3 pts

Thanks cof! I don't know what was up with Verle that day, he was singing much softer than usual.

Everybody singing along would be so much fun. We were thinking we would have to bring a couple laptops and internet so that Verle and Chris could look up the words and the chords and that way we could play most any sing along song even if we don't really know it. The people could see the lyrics too!

[–] 2 pts

Ya can't go wrong with a Petty tune... Well done Gentlemen

Alright, I have played this week, and my fingers HURT lol. I haven't gotten even proficient to play simple stuff yet, so no new recordings.

THIS: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/705939310312018845/ is what I recorded into, and still have it, along with all the master tapes.

Back to the Archive! Before I learned about the band Tool I wrote this thing. Man I think it sounds a lot like their newer stuff lol. Pardon the mistakes, and sloppiness, this was recorded on a Crate GX-130C combo amp and using the Digitech Death Metal pedal back around 1995.

https://soundcloud.com/thewilake/sounds-like-tool

Then I have to throw this one atcha. It was with the same amp, and a digitech RP5 multi-effect thing. Around the same time did this track. I literally flipped the cassette over and recorded the "solo" backwards. <EDIT> I should note, I know this was in some fucked up tuning I made up at the time, and have ZERO clue how to play or re-create this sound or song.

https://soundcloud.com/thewilake/pedal-steel-sound

[–] 3 pts

I kinda regret not recording much of my earlier stuff - or not keeping copies of the many recordings made over the years.

I mean, I can recreate anything I ever did, but I won't.

And, it does sound a bit like Tool. Huh...

[–] 3 pts

I have like 20 cassettes all completely filled with all those old recordings. I put about 75% into the PC about 5 years ago.

[–] 2 pts

I have the odd track here and there, but only a little of it. I used to do studio work at least a half day per week, sometimes a few days. All that is gone. All the bands I was with, those are gone.

A part of me doesn't give a shit, but it'd be kinda neat to have some of that stuff.

Frankly, I'm a much better player now than I was back then. I'm far more practiced today than I've been at all in my life. So, there's nothing I couldn't recreate if needed. Well, except for the vast amount that has been completely forgotten.

[–] 2 pts

The Tool one's beginning strongly reminds of a song but I just can't remember it right now. It's that power note that is really reminiscent. Damn, I'm like HAL in 2001 "I can feel it Dave, my mind is fading".

The second one is pretty trippy with the reversing. I like it.

[–] 3 pts

Thanks. For the "tool" one I realized I borrowed that riff in another thing I posted like 8 months ago:

https://soundcloud.com/thewilake/duel

[–] 2 pts

It's that one note in particular but I just can't place it. Sometimes it takes a while and I'll suddenly remember days later, I'll see if it does.

[–] 1 pt

I don't remember this one or recognize it LoL

[–] 1 pt

My Own Prison by Creed maybe.

[–] 2 pts

I used to have a tascam 4 track cassette recorder that looked similar to that many years ago. I think I might have a tape or two laying around somewhere that is unplayable on anything else. LoL

Tool sounds cool, just a jamming away. I don't know if that sounds like a pedal steel or not LoL

[–] 2 pts

I only know that name from the preset on the RP5. It was called that, then I modified it a ton, and came up with that monstrosity. I still personally like the sound, but don't know what to call it other than "trippy shit from the 90's"

[–] 1 pt

That works! Hell you could claim it's from the 2020's nobody but you would know the difference!

[–] 4 pts

Hi all, I hope no one here has lost any fingers or toes to frostbite. It's been highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s all week in Costa Rica though. No sweat, no chills.

Did you ever have to pee in a cup for a job or a judge? Man, I hate that crap. Yo La Tengo wrote a song that captures that shitty feeling.

Drug Test (soundcloud.com).

(I recorded it to my phone, and I guess the meter peaked a bit, especially towards the end; please forgive : )

[–] 3 pts

I wish I could sing and play at the same time, but alas, in 25+ years it eludes me. Just can't keep the hands moving correctly when I try to "sing"

[–] 2 pts

Once I get the music down, I slow it all down till I can sing across the top. But there's still some stuff that I struggle with. Finger-picking and slide guitar stuff is where I completely lose it.

[–] 2 pts

Man, I hated those days when I was tested. I cheated. I just brought clean urine with me and poured it in the cup. Until a jealous woman called and told them that's what I was doing!

[–] 2 pts

Huh. That's new to me. I've never heard it before.

Thanks for sharing!

It hasn't been too bad in the mid-east coast.

[–] 1 pt

That was great. You played and sang that with authority.

[–] 0 pt

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

[–] 3 pts

Here is a fun by Cosmic Animals. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y7rE8sERIbQ

Iam the singer and drummer.

[–] 3 pts

I guess pootube thinks I'm too young to watch you video I'll be 65 next week ( I never get to have any fun). It shows it's age restricted... Go figure

[–] 1 pt

We are also on soundcloud. Look up cosmic animals beer. Thanks!

[–] 1 pt

Hey Carl, how are you? Happy Birthday, fellow Old Fart!

I saw that age restriction so I was unable to hear the track. I'm even older than you but I don't play YT's games if I can help it. Sure wish one of the other hosting sites would have worked but they squashed any competition. When the service is "free", you are the product.

[–] 0 pt

Happy Birthday Uncle Carl!

I hope you're having a good one!

[–] 1 pt

Thanks for sharing. Been playing long?

[–] 1 pt

The band is about 2years old. I have been playing for 23 years. Thanks for the listen!

[–] 0 pt

Percussion was my first musical love. I can drum. I can sing. I can't sing and drum very well. I really, really suck at doing both. I can sing and play complex lead parts, it's just something about drumming and singing.

Thanks for sharing. We do this every week.

[–] 1 pt

I like beer and I like the groove. Beer!

Thanks for sharing!

[–] 1 pt

Thanks!

[–] 0 pt

You're welcome!

Come back and do it again sometime

Music is better when shared!

[–] 3 pts

Hello and welcome to another FNGT! Like normal, we'll go ahead and get you started.

It has been a short week, or so it seems. We're still taking it easy, but we did have time to bust out something new this week. It's not very complex and didn't require all that much effort, but it's a pretty good song and you can sing along with it. It kinda is in keeping with the Valentine's theme.

The Beatles - All My Loving (B #1, J B, TB P) (share.fngt.gq)

The ladies did the heavy lifting while I pounded the skins. It's not an overly complex tune to play, though there's a lovely bit of bass work for you to enjoy and that was done by our beloved J while Biff strummed along. The most difficult part of Biff's piece was attaching a capo. 'Snot really a song that challenged any of us, but it was fun and it is fun - and that's just as important.

Anyhow, well… Rock on, bears. Rock on!

[–] 4 pts

Classic tune. Simple but effective. Nice job

[–] 3 pts

It's also a fun one to play, and doesn't take a whole lot of effort.

Glad ya liked it.

[–] 4 pts

J's bassline walked all the way to Kansas City. The Beatles early stuff was so fun and bright, always a joy to hear. Good job all.

[–] 3 pts

Glad ya liked it.

Did you sing along?!?

[–] 4 pts

I did but even I wasn't impressed. At least the dog didn't howl.

[–] 3 pts

This is quite different that what we normally hear from you all! Cool!

[–] 2 pts

Yeah, it's a rather simple song and unlike what we normally do.

We're still taking it easy. Most of last year had a new track every week and they were generally challenging tracks. It's time for a break, before we end up losing interest.

[–] 3 pts

There's nothing that says a song has to be difficult to play for it to sound great!

[–] 3 pts

One of my asshole sibs had this on a 45 (along with "Help" and "I Feel Fine") when I was still crawlin'. It's his fault I've spent so much money on guitars and guitar accessories over the years.

[–] 2 pts

It's not very challenging - but it's fun to play.

[–] 1 pt

Here is another song from the other night with Chris and Verle. I thought the last line was simply hilarious.

My Ding-A-Ling (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

Can't go wrong with a little Chuck.

[–] 1 pt

LOL I've busted that song out on stage.

[–] 1 pt

I have to imagine that it is a crowd pleaser!

[–] 1 pt

In the right setting, yes. Small drunken bar? It's a great song. Hip youngsters at a festival? Not so much.

[–] 1 pt

From the archives:

CCR - Fortunate Son (share.fngt.gq)

[–] 1 pt

Ooooh that Red White and Blue!

[–] 1 pt

LOL It's a great tune.

[–] 1 pt

Hell yeah, That John Fogerty could crank them out back in those days.

[–] 1 pt

And, one last one from the archives:

Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl (B #1 & 2; J K; TB P& B) (share.fngt.gq)

[–] 3 pts

If you are going to do a song like that do "Hot Girls In Love" !!

[–] 1 pt

Maybe someday. Right now, we're still pretty much on vacation.

[–] 3 pts

There ya go, a song all of us can relate to.

[–] 2 pts

LOL Speaking of which, I assume you downloaded tonight's newest track.

[–] 2 pts

Of course. That was a new pic, lovely as usual.

[–] 1 pt

Nice one! I remember hearing this one before!

[–] 1 pt

Indeed. You've heard it before.
