I didn't even think about that. I am not institutionalized, I have not really spent too much time incarcerated. So I didn't know people would do shit like keeping good books out of the bin. Fucking criminals.
They presumably see them as having some value, or that they have some control over something.
In a world where you don't have control of many things, you'll seek control when you can. In jail, you don't have control of much - not even when you get out of bed, shower, what you eat, etc...
Yeah. I can understand that. Some people would try to trade me for some canteen item or some dessert for a good book. Hell with that. I would just move on to someone else
In a world where you control little, you're gonna look to control something.
In a world where you have little (and many inmates don't have folks on the outside helping them out) you'll look for advantage to get extra where you can.
It doesn't necessarily justify the behaviors of some inmates, but it does explain it.
