That and today's computers are so much better.
We had 'secret/proprietary' software. We could take video data, assign a dot to each person, and track that dot through the store with like 95% accuracy. It was worth millions of dollars. These days, it's a plugin in your free video editing software - and it's free. Also, you don't need a full rack of servers to do it. Oh, and the accuracy is higher.
So you're saying we are all tracked throughout stores?
Oh, fuck yes. You make it easier by keeping your phone with you with wifi turned on - it doesn't have to connect. They can track you really well and of course they do. They're not deleting all that footage. They're mining it for data. They want to see what you looked at, what you looked at longer, what you touched, what you picked out and put in your cart, etc...
Of course they're tracking you in the store. We wrote software that let them do that and then installed that software (it ran on dedicated hardware) for them, so that they could do it themselves. (They'd contract with us for support and updates.)
Hell, it's probably cheap enough now so that small stores are even doing it. I don't actually know, 'cause I'm out of the field. But, there's a reason my company sold for all that money.
I know, I was kidding. I've installed many people trackers
