You could, but it was an automatic and it'd happily keep rolling. More than once I used the reverse gear to stop but that was doing serious damage to the transmission.
Throwing it in reverse does not sound like a good idea. Once a crazy chick kicked my car into reverse as we were driving down the highway in a big city and my car went into a spin. I ended up facing the wrong way in my lane stopped. That was not good.
Oh, it was horrible but if I timed it just right it'd stop the car. I only did it at very low speeds, so it's all good.
Amusingly, I used to ride in a Dodge (maybe a Chevy) something or other - an 80s car began with a C I think, a compact car and generally a shitbox - with a guy who'd drive like 60 mph and toss it into reverse just for amusement. He was a good buddy for a long time.

Yeah, I think it was the Chevy Chevette. It had a weird sealed transmission, for example.
Anyhow, we were in school together in the late 80s. His dad owned a garage and kept giving him shitty Chevettes. So, we'd try to trash them as fast as we could but each time they'd get replaced with another Chevette. He must have gone through a half dozen of them.
He finally ended up buying his own car. I think that was his dad's point the entire time.
I remember the place I worked at in the 80's had a few Chevettes in the fleet. On a hot day if you had the AC cranked it would barely go
