Yeah, if you're not a writer it's not too terribly important. People should still have their standard English skills learned in primary and secondary school, but so few people seem to actually have learned that stuff.

I write and have written professionally (and academically) in the past. So, I know these sorta things.

Hell, I have a couple of editions of Hart's Rules kicking around here somewhere.

I am competent enough with writing and talking that I can get my point across. That's good enough for me.

Yeah, you're usually just fine with it.

I don't bitch about the next generation all that much, but man those fuckers can't use the language.

Then again, I'm pretty fucking sure the generations before me said the same damned thing I said about my generation.

But, we didn't have 'text speech' and emoticons. Also, this generation has even less of an excuse - they have spellcheck immediately to hand. It's right there! It tells you when you spelled something wrong, they just fucking ignored it.
