If it's a serious crime, bail can be prohibitively expensive.

Yeah, they could easily invent shit to send someone to prison - and they falsely convict all sorts of people. Tons of innocent people also take the plea agreement because they don't want to risk taking it to trial. "Do you want 3.5 years, all suspended by 2.5 years or do you want to take it to court and we ask the judge for 30 years?"
Shit sucks.
I'm not too worried about that happening to me. If it happens to me, I can at least pay to fight the case. How many people can spend $250k on a legal team to fight a case.
I sure as hell could not spend that
