What's ROC? Republic of China
Also, China would be the PRC - People's Republic of China.
I'm pretty sure... My memory is kinda faulty right now, but I'm pretty sure they're the PRC.
They could just be China, they are the host, aren't they?
China is the host, but they can't compete under China's flag. China has their own team and each team is limited in the number of athletes they field. So, they gotta compete as ROC or not at all.
This being the Olympics, there's always some shady shit going on - like a person being granted citizenship in a country just to compete under their flag. Some of the countries that don't field many people will also let you compete under their flag.
...
Russia. It's the "Russian Olympic Committee" because Russia can't compete as a country. There are no mentions of Russia at ceremonies and no Russian flags or anything like that.
It was the same thing for the Summer Olympic games. They got seriously, seriously caught cheating. Like, blatantly caught doping all their athletes. Not just one or two of them, but like all of them. Sometimes without the athlete even knowing they were being doped.
Oh OK, I am not an Olympics watcher. Too many human interest BS stories to manipulate you emotionally
Of course there are. You're supposed to be emotional. That's kinda the whole point of watching sports. Beyond that, they want you to root for the same team they're rooting for - in this case the US 'cause we're watching a US feed.
Emoting is the entire point of watching. Human interest stories help with that. When you know more about the person, you're more emotionally invested. You don't give a shit when someone in your town gets shot and you don't know 'em. You'd be all sorts of emotional if it was your girlfriend that got shot.
