Yup. Manjaro is still kicking. Man, that distro has some history. From Mandrake to Mandriva and now onto Manjaro - but based on Arch. It's amazing.
Hell, Slackware (finally) just got a new version. The last new version was 15 in 2014 or 2015. They're now on 16, I guess...
I don't do the 'news' thing for the site really. I just do articles every other day. I can't possibly keep up with all the news.
Mandrake oh man memories there when i was young. I started with linix at abput 8 yrs old and have tinkered but really need to stop doing usb live persistent systems and build me a full on linix desktop. Slackware is still around thats goos news lots of linux support still sweet. Yeah i dont know how any9ne could keep up so many changes consistently
I used Linux pretty early on but I didn't use it as a desktop OS (exclusive of all other desktop OSes) until 2007. My business was a DEC business before becoming a Sun shop. We mostly used Sun hardware (and Solaris/SunOS, a UNIX) on the server side. So, I had some familiarity coming into it. Plus, as a geek, I'd toyed with Linux on the desktop lots of times. I just didn't use it exclusively until 2007.
Since then, I've largely approached it as an academic pursuit. I'm actually a well-respected, modestly-known member of the community. I've made it a point to give back to the community in ways that I could, even from the start. I'd find questions and then recreate the situation to find solutions when nobody else knew the answer. Today, I'm a recognized Ubuntu member (able to speak for and represent Ubuntu) and moderate one of the largest Linux forums online.
Linux has been a fun hobby for me.
Now if I'd stop buying servers... In the past two weeks, I've rented two new VPSes for two new projects.
I pretty much suck at being retired. In theory, I should be sipping whiskey while chilling with the wife and ignoring the internet. Instead, we're watching cartoons while I keep up with my online obligations. I'm always obligating myself to something new.
I guess 8 would be a pretty young time to get involved in Linux. That probably helps in the long term. Rather than learn a bunch of bad habits with other operating systems, you've learned to administrate your own boxes. With this, you'll have a better understanding of what the computer is really doing under the hood than people in your same age category.
Glad to see so much linux intergration. Truly aspiring. I should get into the server side more. I enjoy installing setups and building the framework putting everything together firing it all off. I hurt my shoulder and broke my heel so recovering from that i thought ill go fet a cwi and use that job to find my fiends lol. Retirement is how you want it. I would say take breaks to go boating hiking fishing and such but enjoy it how ya want. It was young and by accident. Internet just coming around fully expose by 14 building vm with 1g team lol and having 3 for pc windows suck so bad. Thembthe old days of chat rooms and such. I spent most my life outside so it was sporadic usage. I dont belong in large communities or the internet just to wild a vulgar jist a down home swamp ass from dismal swamp. But something bout linux and the work to play is enjoying
Wonder since going to arch will they remove systemd as well for security? That ill look into now my linux fever is hot again lol thanks
I don't really see systemd as a security issue but that's 'cause I understand it. It's just a giant, bloated init system with some great features. By itself, it's pretty harmless. The FUD out there about it is just astounding. There's a reason every major distro uses it - and lo and behold, those systems are not insecure. Not only that, it's reliable - reliable enough for mission critical applications including being used in space for vital components. Hell, systemd is even on Mars.
mostly wanting to see if the system runs better with out the "bloatware" they say systmd is and my system is quite faster i will say. need do system speed test but dont wanna change os so much on the ssd dont wanna do to many read and writes lol life span freak i guess
