Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask Crazy, or myself.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

I rarely post my projects here, but I will do it this time.

And although I'm not a regular player on the guitar thread, I think it's awesome!!!! Bunch of rad folks sharing and encouraging each other.

I am the drummer in this project. Rough mix, first time recording it. No bass yet unfortunately

Simple stuff, but the guitarist has been improving on his loop pedal skills.

Sounds cool. Like ambience music.

[–] 0 pt

Not my kinda stuff but I'd like to hear the drum mics brought up a little and without the drum the guitarist kinda wanders a bit. It works, I suppose. It's hard for me to tell when it's not really what I'm into. (Which is perfectly fine. Ain't everybody gotta be into everything!)

Do y'all gig or just get together to jam or?

[–] 1 pt

Just jammin. Hoping to produce this at all. I'd recommend checking out russian circles, mono, and mogwai. It's what we're going for but obviously way better

[–] 0 pt

I'll have to look into them tomorrow as I'm am off to sleep soon.

Hello and welcome to another FNGT. As is the fashion, we shall get you started.

Getting the tone right was actually difficult for this one. It's aiming for something between a garage recording and a fine studio recording. It's a tough combination, but man don't I love the kit down here.

SRV - Tightrope (The Usual Suspects) (share.fngt.gq)

It's also full of some really tricky timing, but we managed to nail it. I dare say we did a fine job. We did need help with the keys, so we had those done in Maine and we just mixed 'em down here.

Rock on, Poalr Bears. Rock on!

[–] 1 pt

did a dang good job

[–] 0 pt

It was a fun one to record.

[–] 1 pt

I bet so. Srv has some great riffa anf solos to enjoy if you can play them

[–] 1 pt

Damn you're good. Gotta be a blast playing the solo on that one.

This guy died too young.

[–] 0 pt

That sounds great! Man! The drums are excellent! So is the guitar! Though in my mind SRV has more overdrive LoL

[–] 1 pt

You're not necessarily wrong. Compare his live version - say in Austin TX - and then compare it to the studio version. We aimed for a tone closest to the studio.

[–] 1 pt

I was going to add that I generally listen to him live so your tone is probably spot on with the album. I'll just add that now LoL

Recently picked up a Dean Acoustic Electric Bass guitar. Nice. However taking the wife out on a birthday date. SO not much playing for me tonight.

[–] 1 pt

We're kinda here all weekend, but we're definitely here next Friday.

I do love me an acoustic bass. They're like a whole different instrument.

[–] 2 pts

Yea I just wanted something to pick up an play. Without hooking up the amp, and stuff. I can just pick up the acoustic and play. Well I did that before with my electric, just cant hear what your playing much.

[–] 0 pt

They're generally played quite different from each other. For example, you seldom see slap bass being done with an acoustic.

[–] 2 pts

Hi all. I hope everyone is having an awesome day wherever you are.

This is a song about the difficulties involved in getting a dog to take pills.

Take Your Medicine, Lala (soundcloud.com)

[–] 2 pts

I dig the bass tone. Need gear specifics my man.

[–] 1 pt

Thanks!

Well...I think my Peavey Milestone II may be the worst bass ever made, but it's served me well. I think pawn shops are paying people to take them now. Every time I record, I end up spending most of the time mixing the bass track.

I have a really nice Hartke amp with a 4-10" cab, but it rattles my neighbors, so I stuck a couple of pedals (a Red Llama clone and a Brain May booster clone) in line to boost the signal, and then plugged direct to the board (Tascam 688). And I think the strings have been carefully aged at least 20 years.

When mixing down, I have a decent 20-band eq, and a sonic maximizer that makes it all more pleasing to my ears.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

So I google the Peavy. That model is from the 80s. I would argue a shit guitar from the 80's is better than a lot of new guitars today. I bet your Peavy was made in an Asian country thats not China. Just realized and old Peavy would be US made.

Totaly dug the bass tone tho.

And I think the strings have been carefully aged at least 20 years

Dammmmmn son. As soon as one string losses that new sound. Im installing a new set.

[–] 1 pt

Take your medicine Lala. Good sound. First thing I thought of was La la la la Lola.

[–] 1 pt

Now I am sitting here singing 'take your medicine Lala.'

Literally!

Thanks!

Love it!

[–] 1 pt

Well, it does work as a song. It's one of the more unusual subjects, but it works and that's okay.

[–] 2 pts

I liked this song and would mess with it. I bought the tabs from Jorge Nolla because he just plays it straight. Good enough for me.

Puff the Magic Dragon (soundcloud.com)

[–] 0 pt

Nice one. You really got into the swing of it in the middle to the end there.

[–] 1 pt

Can't get the intro to save my life. Drives me up the wall. Played with a metronome because if I don't I'll speed up and run away from myself.

[–] 0 pt

getting over challenges like that is what makes you a better player

[–] 0 pt

Nice work! Amusingly, I had just mentioned missing Mary Travers in the comment just prior to this one.

If I'm gonna name drop, I've played with Noel Paul Stookey quite a few times.

[–] 2 pts

Yeah, COF told me you knew him. I love The Wedding Song by him. I posted it here but I also sang it. That song has a great guitar backup.

[–] 0 pt

I feel like looking sternly and saying, "You did satisfactory."

But, that was a pretty solid arrangement and you did quite well. You could share more often. You might like this dude's work:

https://www.youtube.com/user/KellyValleau

And, yeah, I know Noel well enough to exchange pleasantries by snail nail or whatever. He's a great treat to play with,

[–] 0 pt

I don't know who that Noel is

[–] 0 pt

He was "Paul" in the ban.

Did you folks ever see that Cowsills Documentary. Family Band: The Cowsills Story. It was real as hell. They were a family band. The did Hair, Love American Style, and The Rain the Park and Other Things. I saw it on Amazon Prime for free and now they want money. I think they track your views and then they charge you. I was wondering if they charge you Prime people.

They were a family band who the producers loved. They said they were well practiced and ready to go when they were in the studio. The Partridge Family was modeled after them.

Man their father fucked them. It was one of the best docs I've ever seen. Totally made out of love.

[–] 0 pt

I haven't seen that. Under normal circumstances, I do not really watch much TV or movies.

However, when the pandemic began I said I'd watch TV until it's officially over. So, I've seen a whole lot of television in rhw past couple of years.

Welcome to the niggerhouse!

Here's another song Chris and I jammed out to the other night. A Dave Van Ronk song, Please, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean (soundcloud.com)

[–] 0 pt

Hmm... I'm pretty sure that's a BB King song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWOHqo-Da6A

[–] 0 pt

Oh ok, you're probably right. I just looked at the lyrics Chris used on the laptop when he sang it. It's the kind of song where many people have done a version

[–] 0 pt

I'd not be surprised. But, once BB did it, it became a BB King song. He was just that awesome.

[–] 0 pt

Hey everybody. My buddy Chris came over again this past week to jam out and drink beer. Here is a version of a Monkees song we played, Stepping Stone (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

I'm not much of a Monkees fan, but it does indeed turnout that we did not in fact play the same song this week!

LOL

Those fuckers didn't even play their own instruments. Well, eventually a few of them learned to play.

[–] 1 pt

Yeah, I think technically this is a Wrecking Crew song with the Monkees providing vocals

[–] 0 pt

Probably...

[–] 1 pt

Man alive the Monkees had some famous song writers. Neil Diamond wrote I'm a Believer. I believe Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote a song they did.

I like Pleasant Valley Sunday. Total sarcastic song. Some famous dude wrote that one, I think.

[–] 0 pt

I've got one more to share with you all tonight from this week's jams. I doubt he wrote it but once he did it it became one of his songs, he was that awesome LoL, Elvis Blue Suede Shoes (soundcloud.com)

[–] 1 pt

Carl Perkins did this song first. He did it better that Elvis in my opinion. More attitude and guitar is really excellent.

Elvis ain't too shabby either.

Tell you what, you cats are into 50's 60's shit. The older you get, the more you figure out those are the great songs to play. I never get tired of 'em.

[–] 0 pt

I'll give any music a chance. I like good music, or whatever I consider good music. But there's songs in every genre that I love and songs in the same genre's that I hate. So it's not the genre for me, its the song

[–] 1 pt

That's my feeling. I figger there are two kinds of music. Country and Western. No. Rock and Roll. No. Either you like it or you don't.

[–] 0 pt

LOL So, you didn't do Sugar Magnolia? Chris asked for suggestions, so I picked that one as the only "hard" part is the slide in the A chord.

[–] 0 pt

We did not. We got as far as the slide to the A chord LoL

[–] 0 pt

Make the A chord (easier if you just fret it with one finger) but make it on the first fret.

Strum the A chord, trying to ignore the other strings.

Slide the A chord to the correct position - the 2nd fret.

The other chords are like a D and an E for the first half of the song.
