When I first guitar I bought Van Halen I & 2 and Rush hemispheres songbooks with the standard notation not tab. And I learned them

Yeah, a new guitar student would subscribe to a guitar magazine at some point - but probably not right away. They'd likely start by buying them off the shelf from a book store or their local guitar shop.
