If you drive an hour north, aren't you in Canada, or really close to it?

No, not quite to Canada, it would the the upper peninsula of Michigan and hour north

Ah, yeah... Can't forget the Yuppers. In my head, you're too far west to hit the Yuppers and you'd be in Canada, or really damned close to it.

My geography is not perfect. While I've been in your area, it wasn't for long - and certainly not long enough to 'get the lay of the land'.
