Were people expecting a slew of clowns to come out of that thing?
I don't think so. I think most of 'em weren't sure what to expect. I have a pair of 'em, but this was the first time I took one into the village for a parade. It's the first time I've driven it, really. It's just an inline 3 speed but the driving position is weird.
It tops out at like 45 mph, but you don't want to go that fast in one. It feels like you're going 100 and like you're going to drive off into the bushes at any moment. So, you should probably leave for your destination nice and early. It's fine once you're down to inner-city driving speeds.
The door is attached to the steering wheel, which is actually pretty handy. It's how you pull the door close enough to get to the handle. There's not a lot of room for a second person, so make sure they're not very big and don't smell bad.
I don't think I would want to go over 30 mph in one of those
Probably not. 30 feels like you're going twice as fast. There aren't even any seat belts, and I don't think the windshield is safety glass.
Yeah... If you hit something at 30 mph, you're pretty well fucked. The only thing holding you in the car is a steering wheel - and that'll move outwards if the door somehow opened.
We cheated and drove it into the village on a trailer. We then went for a drive in it after the parade. We took it up to the Height Of The Land and then had a terrifying descent back into the village. It climbed the mountain well enough but only at maybe 35 mph. We were going slow enough so that we pretty much had a 2nd parade behind us.
It was the way back that was terrifying. It's back down a mountain and then around the lake. The around the lake bit was not too bad.
We stopped for lunch and came home after putting the car back on the trailer. It was a mostly uneventful day. I will not be taking one out for daily drives.
