sweet. i didnt think about parafin good idea, thanks. i had ordered those little chunks an 8pk. they are candles jist plain white wax but parafin is lighter and takes less heat so ill see if i can get that first. appreciate the suggestion. i put both in but one didnt work so i must trouble shoot and need so will rewrap as i have enough for quite a few attempts. i bought 33000 feet lol and only used half i reckon. i did 720x8 wraps on one and 737x8 on the other and the onbe that did work was sounding nice. wife said she didnt think its sound that well but it did. to be honest it sounded jist as good as any other half way decent hand wound coil. had 7/16 gap to fill. used aged alnico 2 magnets and 43awg enameled wire and i was super happy. i did notice it was quite quieter then the ones i removed. then ones i made should be about 5600-5700 but i feel they are a bit lower but its still cool and delicious sounding to be honest.
I've potted a bunch of 'em over the years, but my only experiences with building them involved a borrowed winding machine, taking most of the guesswork and skill out of it.
There's alot of ways to mod them. Pole sizes, wire size, amount of space for coil. My one bobbin was bad so will order a new one along with a sss set and a pick guard so I can have a preload hss and a preloaded sss on hand
Yeah, I have a very good friend that gets paid quite well to make pickups and boutique amps. We went to school together. He dropped out and was a roadie and then guitar tech to some pretty famous people before moving on to do what he does now. He probably has enough money to retire, but he's still taking orders.
