I started it bright and early, before I even went for my drive.

Yeah you have to, smoking a turkey takes a while

It's definitely worth it. After I left last night, I gave it a good rub and let it sit in the fridge. This morning, I took it out and let it reach room temperature before applying another rub. I then smoked it, basting it every couple of hours after the first four hours. I used oak, hickory, and mesquite pellets in the smoker.
