Yeah, it's fucking retarded. They're not even counting it as albums sold any more. They use a proprietary algorithm and count 'streams' as album sales.

That's like counting radio plays as album sales.

It's fucking bullshit and meant to create "new records" and stimulate the music industry's sales.

If you can't tell, I'm kinda pissed about the whole thing.

I don't deny that she makes songs people find catchy, but the whole statistics system is just fucked.

It reminds me of the summer I spent working for a music store. If there was a big album coming out, the labels would send a truck full of albums. Those counted as 'sales'. A month later, we'd send back the thousands of copies now that the album was "charting".

It was bullshit then. It's more bullshit now. I have zero fucking respect for the whole fucking institution. It's corrupt as all fuck. It might just as well be made up of elected officials, it's that corrupt. These days they're counting an algorithm that doesn't even count streams but estimates the number of streams.
