That's a good one. Kind of like that guy Petey who put his car in my ditch early last summer, he told the cops his mom was driving and she was at the hospital. Cause he was obviously too drunk to drive, and his mom was in the hospital
I've managed to get away with a whole lotta shit by just not answering the cop's questions like they wanted me to.
"Sir, I haven't got a damned clue what you're on about."
Unless it's a crime against me or someone I love, I'm probably not even going to give the police a statement. There are obvious exceptions. Like, if I see someone beat and rob an old woman, I'm probably gonna give a statement and I'm probably gonna testify in court.
But, something like a driving offense? Pfft.... Ain't nobody dead, so I didn't see a damned thing. I don't care if I was in the car, I didn't see a damned thing. Hell, I didn't even give a statement to the police when my femur got smashed. I believe I told 'em that I'd decline to talk to them until I could speak with my lawyer. They never asked me for a statement since.
The DA did ask me for a statement, which I crafted with the help of said lawyer. They decided to not put me on the stand.
They also didn't need one iota of a statement from me. Nope... There was a clear trail of evidence! Undeniable evidence, even! LOL They didn't need a damned thing from me.
Yeah I am sure they had his BAC and the wrecked car way off the road to prove their case
LOL They even had his DNA all over the airbags on the driver's side of the car.
They knew he was a lawyer, so they were really careful to collect evidence and do everything by the book. So, yeah... He was gonna get in trouble for that one. They still kinda let him off light, in some regards. He only did 30 days and only did those on the weekends. He did have quite a bit of a suspended sentence. He's still on probation for it, but so many other people would have been sentenced to much worse sentences.
And no, no he did not defend himself. As I recall, and my memory is kinda fuzzy, he hired a couple of lawyers that deal with drunk driving accidents (and driving offenses) more than they deal with other things. But, in the end, he still took a plea bargain. He didn't take it to trial or anything.
I can't say that I blame 'em. LOL Ain't no way he was gonna win a fucking thing in a trial, except maybe a longer sentence 'cause he cost the court more money prosecuting him. That's not much of a win, now that I think about it.
